Just as exercise is essential for a healthy, active life in a normal person, its importance increases even more in arthritis. There are two types of exercises for rheumatoid arthritis. One is aerobic exercise, which involves the whole body, and the other is exercises to strengthen the joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis. In today's post, we are discussing aerobic exercises.

Aerobic exercises involve multiple muscle groups, such as walking, using a stationary bicycle, and swimming. These exercises increase the heart rate to supply oxygen, speed up breathing, enhance overall blood flow, improve the flexibility of muscles, bones, and joints, and increase strength. Aerobic exercises are also very important for the heart and circulatory system.

The aerobic exercises we can confidently prescribe for arthritis patients include using a stationary bicycle and pool walking because they do not put direct pressure on any joint, allowing joint patients to continue comfortably. Walking at a moderate speed is a very good exercise, but sometimes pain and damage in the waist and knees become so severe that your doctor may advise against walking. Therefore, consult your rheumatologist before starting any exercise.

Building stamina is crucial in exercise. Start with a short duration, such as 10 minutes of walking, and do it regularly for a week. Increase the duration by two to three minutes every week. Try not to take breaks in your exercise routine. If you miss a day or two, return to your regime as soon as possible. Building stamina strengthens both muscles and bones and helps you perform new activities.

For the stationary cycle, start with just 30 seconds or 1 minute and increase the duration by 15 seconds each week. It is important to remember not to start exercising if there is severe pain in the joints. If you experience severe pain, take a break for one to two weeks. When your joints feel better, resume exercising. Maintaining a regular exercise routine not only keeps the body healthy but also helps control arthritis quickly and minimizes the need for medications.
