Diet is very important in managing rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation can be controlled through diet, while eating the wrong foods can increase inflammation in the body and joints. It's important to note that 20% of arthritis patients are sensitive to certain food groups. Foods like gluten, rice, meat, or pulses may immediately increase inflammation in some patients. These foods should be completely avoided if they trigger symptoms.
In arthritis, a plant-based diet, including naturally grown foods, is beneficial. This includes fresh fruits, raw vegetables, boiled or steamed vegetables, whole grain cereals like unrefined flour, multigrain flour, brown rice, and natural porridges. Curd is a good source of calcium, but ensure fat is removed from milk and curd, and avoid additives. Yeast and soda can destroy the beneficial properties of milk.
Fish is a good source of protein and is best consumed grilled or steamed. Chicken and eggs are acceptable, but red meat should be minimized. Avoid sweets and desserts, including sugar and jaggery. Fatty oils, butter, and ghee should be avoided. Refined flour and bakery items should also be avoided. Processed foods, often found in ready-made packets, can be harmful and increase pain.
Hydration is crucial in arthritis. Drink plenty of water: 8 glasses in winter and 14 in summer. Avoid carbonated drinks like Coke, Pepsi, or diet sodas, as they can increase swelling and weaken bones by depleting calcium. Raw fruits are better than fruit juices, but if eating raw fruits is difficult, smoothies with added water are an option. Minimize fruit juices and tea.
By following these guidelines, you can create a diet plan to better manage your condition.
